Prion Island, Bay of Isles,
South Georgia Island
See the incredible wandering albatross on Prion Island was a dream come true! These massive birds have the longest wingspan of any bird on the planet ranging from 8ft to over 11ft and can live up to 50 years!
Wandering albatross pairs mate for life and do not reach sexual maturity until 9 – 11 years of age.. Nests are constructed from a mound of grasses and moss and a single egg is laid with both parents taking turns to incubate the egg (that hatches after two months) and then to feed the growing chick, which remains on the nest for around nine months,
Populations of wandering albatross are declining due to commercial longline fishing methods where they may drown after attempting to seize bait from longline hooks, getting snared and pulled under.
