Black Oystercatchers (Haematopus bachmani)

Carmel, California

The behavior exhibited here is known as a "piping display". It is used to greet mates or threaten intruders which was the situation here as another pair arrived close by. Pairs rotate in place or run side by side with short quick steps while giving piping notes. Quite comical to watch!
