Golden-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia atricapilla)
UC Santa Cruz Arboretum
Santa Cruz, California
Golden-crowned Sparrows are part of a study being conducted at the arboretum and many of the birds seen are banded. These pretty song birds spend their summers up in Alaska and British Columbia and return to the Pacific coast in winter. Their melancholy song is a sign of the changing of the seasons and one I always welcome.
