Adélie Penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae)
East Base
Stonington Island, Antarctica
Stonington Island is the location of the United States' ‘East’ base. The American base was established in 1939 by the US Antarctic Service Expedition and then later reoccupied in 1947–48 by the private American Finn Ronne Antarctic Expedition. Edith "Jackie" Ronne and Judy Darlington were part of the expedition and became the first women to overwinter in Antarctica. Having read the autobiography "Antarctica's First Lady" by Jackie Ronne prior to my departure, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to visit the base, which is located in such an incredibly beautiful, yet very remote part of the peninsula. Upon our arrival, a handful of Adélie penguins were there to greet us and I managed to capture this image as they posed perfectly before heading off to a destination unknown. It is one of my favorite images.
